Halton Hills council is set to vote Monday, Nov. 9, on heritage protection for the George H. Kennedy Home at 49 & 51 Main Street North in Georgetown. A by-law on the council agenda would designate the house under Part IV of the Ontario Heritage Act, the part of the provincial law that lets a town protect an individual property.

The house stands at the northeast corner of Main Street North and Ewing Street. The town's heritage statement calls it a representative example of a Gothic Revival home with Italianate influences, two styles that shaped many Ontario houses of the Victorian era.

Its namesake was a fixture of local government. Kennedy (1836-1901), the son of Charles Kennedy and Elizabeth Williams, sat on County Council and served as Deputy Reeve and later Reeve of Georgetown. In 1892 he became Clerk of Esquesing Township, the rural township around Georgetown that later became part of Halton Hills.

Council endorsed the plan on July 13, when it approved a staff report recommending the designation; Monday's by-law would make it official. Once a property is designated, owners generally need the town's permission for changes that would affect its heritage features.

The meeting runs from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. in Council Chambers at Halton Hills Town Hall, 1 Halton Hills Drive.
