Competitive student-athletes who want a spot in the first class of a new sports academy at Oakville's next public high school have until 11:59 p.m. Monday, Nov. 30, to apply. The Academy for Athletic Performance and Excellence, known as APEX, will be based at the new Oakville Secondary School at 4020 Sixth Line, which is scheduled to open in September 2027.

APEX is the Halton District School Board's first regional sports program. The board runs Oakville's public schools and the rest of Halton Region's, and APEX is open to students from anywhere in Ontario.

The program combines sports science, the study of how athletes train, perform and recover, with performance technology, training and regular high school classes. It is designed as an academic and athletic pathway for competitive athletes, particularly those competing at the provincial or national level. The first intake is for students entering Grades 9 and 10 in fall 2027.

Athletic training is part of the school day, not an add-on. Students will use the new campus's three gymnasiums, a fitness and weight room, a practice field and a domed turf field.

The board first announced APEX on Sept. 10 as a brand-new program launching in September 2027. The academy is one program within the new school, not the whole school.

Schools will tell candidates where their applications stand by Friday, Dec. 4, and students who are offered a place must accept it by Friday, Dec. 11.
