Oakville residents who want a hand in what gets built next door, which old homes get protected or how the library is run have until 4:30 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 20 to apply for a four-year seat on one of five Town committees and boards.
The Town is filling the seats ahead of the new 2026–2030 council term, according to its public notice. The newly elected council is the one that will make the appointments; it holds its first meeting on Monday, Nov. 16, at 6:30 p.m. at Town Hall.
The Heritage Oakville Advisory Committee has the most openings and the Community Spirit Awards Selection Committee the fewest. The other bodies recruiting are the Committee of Adjustment, the Oakville Public Library Board and the Accessibility Advisory Committee, which advises the Town on making its services and spaces usable for people with disabilities.
The Committee of Adjustment decides requests for minor variances, small exceptions to the zoning bylaw's rules on things like setbacks or building size, and applications to sever land, splitting one lot into more. Council appoints its members under Ontario's Planning Act, but the Town says council plays no part in its decisions.
The heritage committee advises council on protecting historic buildings. On Tuesday, Nov. 10, the current members are to consider notices of intention to designate four properties, including Evergreen Lodge at 509 Lakeshore Road East and Rockdale Farmhouse at 91 Germorda Drive. A notice of intention is a formal step toward heritage designation under Ontario law.
Applicants must be at least 18 and live in Oakville, unless a committee's terms of reference say otherwise, and some bodies set their own membership requirements. Council appoints qualified candidates, and the Town's procedure says community diversity shall be considered in making appointments. Everyone who applies is told the outcome in writing.
Expect to show up: a member who misses three meetings in a row, or more than half in a calendar year, can have their seat declared vacant. Members normally serve no more than two consecutive terms unless council decides otherwise.
Committee descriptions and application forms are on the Town's Advisory Committees and Boards page. Questions about the process go to the Clerk's department at 905-815-6015 or [email protected].
