Halton District School Board trustees vote Tuesday, Nov. 3, on changes to how the board fills a trustee seat that falls empty between elections. A committee report says the changes draw on lessons from the board's most recent appointment, when the existing procedure was "insufficient to accommodate a large number of applicants."
Trustees are the elected members who set policy and the budget for public schools in Burlington and across Halton. When one leaves partway through a term, the board can appoint a replacement. Under the proposed procedure, applicants would get their interview questions 24 hours before their interview.
The new wording also says the board may choose not to fill a seat that opens within 90 days of the end of a term. The board's trustee operations policy, its rulebook for how trustees work, had said it "will not" fill such a seat.
The report comes from Robbie Brydon, chair of the board's Policy, By-Law and Governance Committee.
Tuesday's public meeting runs from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. at the J.W. Singleton Education Centre, 2050 Guelph Line, and is livestreamed.
