Halton District School Board trustees are scheduled to vote Tuesday, Nov. 3, on hiring accounting firm Deloitte LLP to check the enrolment numbers the board reported to the province for the 2024-2025 school year. The fee would be up to $30,000, before taxes.
According to a board report, Ontario's Ministry of Education told the board on July 31 that it had been selected for two reviews: one of its day school enrolment and one of its English as a Second Language (ESL) data. Student counts drive much of the money the province gives school boards. Both reviews are what accountants call agreed-upon procedures: the firm works through a set list of checks on the records already submitted and reports what it finds, rather than producing a full audit.
Not every school is covered. The checks focus on four: Burlington Central Secondary School, Dr Frank J Hayden Secondary School, Dr David R Williams Public School and Milton District Secondary School.
Lilian Cheung, an audit partner at Deloitte, is listed among those attending the board's Audit Committee meetings for the year ended Aug. 31, 2026.
The recommendation comes to trustees from T. Rocha, chair of the board's Audit Committee for 2026-2027. The completed review must reach the ministry by Tuesday, Dec. 15.
