The new public high school on Sixth Line in Oakville is about to get a real name. Trustees of the Halton District School Board, which runs Burlington's public schools, will choose one at their meeting in Burlington on Tuesday, Nov. 3. For now the school at 4020 Sixth Line goes by a placeholder: Oakville NE #1 Secondary School.

A staff report lists five shortlisted names: Bronte Creek Secondary School, North Oak Secondary School, Riverstone, Sixteen Mile and Sixteen Mile Creek. The naming committee that put the list together did not rank them by preference, so trustees start with a clean slate.

One option comes with a catch. The report points out that North Oak is already used by the developer Minto for a private residential development in North Oakville.

Whatever it's called, the school matters beyond Oakville. It will be home to the board's new regional sports program, the Academy for Athletic Performance and Excellence (APEX), which launches in September 2027 and is open to all eligible secondary students across Ontario, including those in Burlington. The board has announced the campus will have three gymnasiums, a fitness and weight room, a practice field and a domed turf field.

Tuesday's vote isn't the last word. Once trustees pick a name, staff will send it to Ontario's Minister of Education, who oversees the province's school system, for final approval.

The meeting runs from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. at the J.W. Singleton Education Centre, 2050 Guelph Line. The public gallery holds 60 people, first come, first served, and the meeting is livestreamed on hdsb.ca and the board's YouTube channel.

Families thinking about APEX have a deadline: online applications for it and the board's other specialty programs close at 11:59 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 30.
