Sean Campbell will be Ward 2's next City and Regional Councillor after finishing 105 votes ahead of Gary Carr in Burlington's municipal election on Monday, Oct. 26, according to results the City of Burlington posted.
The gap is the same 105 votes the unofficial count showed, and the City has now posted the results as official.
Four candidates split the vote, and Campbell won with about a third of it, barely ahead of Carr. Masha Brar was a strong third with roughly a quarter of the vote, while Jeremy Gaetan finished well back.
| Candidate | Votes | Share |
|---|---|---|
| Sean Campbell | 2,967 | 33.44% |
| Gary Carr | 2,862 | 32.25% |
| Masha Brar | 2,273 | 25.61% |
| Jeremy Gaetan | 770 | 8.67% |
There was no incumbent on the ballot. Ward 2's sitting councillor, Lisa Kearns, ran for mayor instead of seeking re-election in the ward. She finished second to Marianne Meed Ward, who took 44.29 per cent of the mayoral ballots to Kearns' 30.21 per cent, so Kearns leaves council when the new term begins.
The title City and Regional Councillor reflects a two-level job. Burlington's mayor and city councillors also sit on Halton Regional Council, the upper-tier government that runs services such as water, waste collection and regional roads for Burlington, Oakville, Milton and Halton Hills. At Burlington city hall, Campbell will vote on matters like local roads, parks, planning and the city budget; at the region, on those shared services.
A ward councillor is also the first call for most neighbourhood concerns, from a pothole or a rezoning application to a parking problem, so Ward 2 residents will be dealing with someone new.
Campbell takes office when the new council is sworn in.
