Xin Yi Zhang has been re-elected to represent Burlington's Wards 3 and 6 on the Halton District School Board, the elected board that runs public schools across Burlington and the rest of Halton Region. Zhang won by 8,669 votes in the Monday, Oct. 26 municipal election, according to results posted by the City of Burlington.
Zhang took 11,248 of the 13,827 votes the two candidates received, about 81 per cent; challenger Sukhwinder Singh had 2,579. Zhang won more than four times as many votes as Singh. The results are unofficial until the city clerk certifies them.
| Candidate | Votes | Share |
|---|---|---|
| Xin Yi Zhang | 11,248 | 81.34% |
| Sukhwinder Singh | 2,579 | 18.65% |
In Ward 6, one of the two wards the seat covers, about 5,000 voter information letters, the notices that tell residents how and where to vote, went undelivered, so online voting was extended through Sunday, Oct. 25, the day before election day.
In Ontario, school trustees are chosen on the same ballot as the mayor and council. Trustees vote on the school board's budget and policies, hire and oversee its director of education, and are the elected link between parents and the board: the person families in Wards 3 and 6 can call when a concern about their public school isn't resolved at the school itself.
Zhang's next term begins in November 2026, when the current board, elected in October 2022, finishes its term.
