Homes near Regional Road 25 and Louis St. Laurent Avenue in Milton have been emptied while crews deal with natural gas escaping inside a house, Halton Regional Police say.
Emergency and utility crews are working in stages, and police have no estimate of how long it will take to resolve. The evacuation is a precaution. Evacuated residents are sheltering on transit buses for now.
Workers from Enbridge Gas, the utility that delivers natural gas to homes across the region, went to a home on Bartleman Terrace after a report of a gas smell and quickly found what appeared to be a major leak inside, police say. At around 7:45 p.m., police, the Milton Fire Department and Milton Hydro, the town's electricity distributor, responded to Enbridge's request for help.
Anyone who smells natural gas should call the gas emergency line at 1-866-763-5427 or 911 from a safe distance, such as a neighbour's home. The emergency service is free and runs 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
