Burlington is reviewing its Noise and Nuisance Control By-law, which sets when builders can make noise near your home, and wants residents' views on construction hours, noise and other neighbourhood impacts. The City's online survey is open until Monday, Nov. 30.
Under the current by-law, construction is allowed from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday to Saturday. It is banned on Sundays and statutory holidays unless the City grants an exemption. When an exemption allows work outside regular hours, the builder must notify every residence within 150 metres of the site.

Some construction-related noise and impacts fall outside the by-law entirely. The City says it does not cover the beeping of construction vehicles backing up, honking, workers talking to each other on site, or traffic delays caused by construction.
Residents aren't the only ones being asked. The City is also gathering input from the construction industry on how any changes could affect project timelines, costs and delivery.
There are three ways to weigh in. Besides the online survey, residents can attend an in-person meeting at Alton Community Centre on Tuesday, Nov. 17, or join a virtual session on Thursday, Nov. 19. At the in-person meeting, a staff presentation starts at 6:45 p.m., followed by questions and feedback on dotmocracy boards, where people vote on options by placing sticker dots.
| Option | Date | Time | Where |
|---|---|---|---|
| Online survey | By Nov. 30 | Any time | Online |
| In-person meeting | Nov. 17 | 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. | Alton Community Centre |
| Virtual session | Nov. 19 | 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. | Online |
Nothing has changed yet. City staff will summarize what they hear and present it to Council, along with a recommendation, in a report expected in the first three months of 2027.
