Halton Region, the regional government Burlington shares with Halton Hills, Milton and Oakville, has bought a vacant lot at 89 Guelph Street in Halton Hills for $1,750,000. It plans a building there with up to 28 units of assisted and supportive housing: homes with on-site help for people who can't easily live on their own. The sale closed Thursday, Oct. 15.

The agreed price was originally $2,000,000. Regional staff, who got the go-ahead to buy the property through a confidential report to council, say their due diligence, the checks a buyer does before closing, brought it down by $250,000.

The lot sits next to an existing project of the Halton Community Housing Corporation, the Region's non-profit social housing provider, and a Community Wellness Hub, so the new homes would join regional housing and services already on the street.

The Region's Comprehensive Housing Strategy aims for between 450 and 1,350 new assisted and supportive units across Halton over the next decade.

Staff will bring future reports to regional council asking for the money to build and for approval to go ahead with construction.
