A Halton Regional Police Service sergeant is facing a criminal charge over a police pursuit of a stolen Hummer that ended in a crash with a tractor-trailer in Mississauga last year.

Sgt David Joseph is charged with dangerous operation of a conveyance causing bodily harm. The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) announced the charge on Wednesday, Oct. 28, saying its director has reasonable grounds to believe a Halton officer committed a criminal offence during the chase. The charge has not been proven in court.

According to the SIU, it started on the morning of March 12, 2025, when Halton officers were investigating the theft of a Kia Sedona from a home in Oakville. A stolen GMC Hummer was also involved in that theft.

Officers chased the Hummer through Oakville and into Mississauga, in a pursuit the SIU says was led by Sgt Joseph. It ended when the Hummer collided with a tractor-trailer at Winston Churchill Boulevard and Lakeshore Road East.

The Hummer's driver, a 26-year-old, was arrested and taken to hospital with a serious injury, the SIU says.

The SIU says it won't comment further on its investigation because the case is now before the courts.

Sgt Joseph is scheduled to appear in the Ontario Court of Justice in Milton at 9 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 23.
