Halton Regional Police have charged a man with fraud after an investigation at the Serbian Orthodox Diocese of Canada in Milton, the church office that oversees Serbian Orthodox parishes across the country. Police allege the fraud caused losses of more than $200,000.
Jovan Marjanac, 40, of Wingham, Ont., was arrested Wednesday, Oct. 21, and charged with one count of fraud over $5,000, the Criminal Code charge used for larger frauds. The allegations have not been tested in court.
The force's Financial Crimes Unit began investigating in August after allegations that the diocese's former secretary had submitted fraudulent expense claims and redirected money meant for the diocese into accounts he personally controlled.
Police are asking anyone with information about the case to call the Financial Crimes Unit at 905-825-4777 ext. 8746.
