Drivers heading between Oakville and Burlington should get a new way across on Monday, Nov. 30, when the Wyecroft Road bridge over Bronte Creek is expected to open. Halton Region's Commissioner of Public Works, the regional official in charge of roads and water, gave that target date, according to a newsletter from Oakville's Ward 2 councillors.
Halton Region, the upper level of local government that runs major roads and water service across Oakville, Burlington, Milton and Halton Hills, is extending Wyecroft Road between Bronte Road and Burloak Drive in Oakville's Ward 1. The new stretch is a four-lane road with multi-use paths for walkers and cyclists, plus on-road bike lanes.
Until it opens, Wyecroft Road stops near Bronte Creek, and local traffic is sent north onto the QEW or south through residential neighbourhoods. The new crossing is meant to give motorists another route between the two cities and take pressure off both local roads and the highway, the newsletter says.
The Region also expects the link to shorten trips to the Appleby and Bronte GO stations and to connect nearby employment lands, making it easier for business owners, workers and shoppers to reach jobs and stores there.
Along with the road, the work adds traffic lights at a new intersection at McPherson Road and a watermain between Burloak Drive and Bronte Road to serve future growth. Dufferin Construction Company is the contractor, with WSP Canada Group Limited administering the project.
The Town of Oakville finished the environmental assessment, the formal study of a project's effects on its surroundings that must be done before building, in 1994 and updated it in 2006. The Region approved money for the work in 2019, and construction began in October 2023, nearly three decades after the original study.
| When | Milestone |
|---|---|
| 1994 | Town of Oakville completes environmental assessment |
| 2006 | Town issues addendum to the assessment |
| 2019 | Halton Region approves funding |
| October 2023 | Construction begins |
| Nov. 30, 2026 | Expected opening |
The newsletter says the project is on budget and will meet its timetable if it opens in late autumn. The Region's 2023 construction notice set completion for late 2026, so a Nov. 30 opening would land within the schedule given when work began.
The Region also anticipated finishing tree planting at other sites this fall to make up for trees cut down for the extension.
