Five downtown Milton streets will close from 1 to 3 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 8, as Royal Canadian Legion Branch 136 marches to the Cenotaph, the town's memorial to those who died in war. The branch, Milton's local chapter of Canada's national veterans' organization, is inviting the community to that parade and to a second one on Remembrance Day.
Sunday's parade forms up at the Legion hall, 21 Charles Street, and the march is set to begin at 1:30 p.m., half an hour after the roads close. Members of the Registered Nurses' Association of Ontario, the professional group for the province's registered nurses, are among those meeting in front of the Legion to take part.
Downtown Milton's closure announcement on Facebook lists five stretches of road, on parts of Charles Street, Main Street East, Bell Street, Mary Street and Brown Street.
| Street | From | To |
|---|---|---|
| Charles St. | Pearl St. | Main St. E |
| Main St. E | Charles St. | Bell St. |
| Bell St. | Main St. E | Mary St. |
| Mary St. | Bell St. | Brown St. |
| Brown St. | Mary St. | Main St. E |
The second parade, on Wednesday, Nov. 11, Remembrance Day, the anniversary of the end of the First World War, is a separate march: it forms up inside Milton Evergreen Cemetery and moves to the Legion Cairn, a stone memorial in the cemetery, at 10:45 a.m. Shortly after, at 11 a.m., all Milton Public Library branches will observe a moment of silence, the library says.
| Date | Time | What | Where |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sunday, Nov. 8 | 1:30 p.m. | Legion parade | Legion hall to the Cenotaph |
| Wednesday, Nov. 11 | 10:45 a.m. | Legion parade | Evergreen Cemetery to the Legion Cairn |
| Wednesday, Nov. 11 | 11:00 a.m. | Moment of silence | All Milton Public Library branches |
The Milton Historical Society says the cairn was built to honour Branch 136 members buried in Evergreen Cemetery, but that over time many members who meet that criteria and served in the armed forces were not recorded on it. The society says the Legion is investigating how to correct the errors.
Still need a poppy? The Legion is selling them at the Main Library and the Sherwood Branch through Wednesday, the last day of a campaign that began Oct. 24.
