The Compassion Society of Halton, a free food bank on Fairview Street in Burlington, says in an Instagram post Tuesday that it received a $10,000 donation from the Zonta Club of Oakville.
The club's treasurer, Donna Kirichenko, and its president, Theresa Valley, presented the cheque. The society says the gift will help it keep providing essential support to individuals and families.

The charity connects people with food, clothing and community services, and serves neighbours in Burlington, Oakville, Milton, Halton Hills, Acton and Georgetown. It says it relies on the generosity of the community to keep its doors open.
The society began more than 25 years ago, when founder Mina Wahidi put a clothing rack in her Burlington basement for neighbours.
Those who want to help can give to its Holiday Gift Program. The food bank says Walmart, President's Choice and Dollarama gift cards received by Friday, Dec. 4 will have the most impact. It is at 1881 Fairview St., Units 4 and 5.
